Link to Reading Lists: Form V & Form VI
We see it as our job to interest, excite and inspire our pupils through the teaching of English; to match children to books and to encourage them to read above themselves; to show the rewards of bringing an experience to words, to make the way language works a source of fascination and fun.
The English syllabus is shaped around this broad view and at its heart is the acquisition and development of communication skills. It is our aim to foster an appreciation in pupils of works of literature in their own and other cultures, to develop critical awareness of language and literature while promoting an enjoyment of all aspects of the subject. Embedded in the learning process is the need to hold an understanding and respect of each other’s opinions. Creativity and self-expression is fostered through a positive and supportive relationship with our pupils. In appreciating and nurturing all abilities the English Department works with the understanding that high standards come through high expectations. This ethos is supported by:
An excellent, well stocked school library
Book Fairs
The inter House Book Quiz
Special events celebrating World Book Day and National Poetry Day
Visiting poets, authors, storytellers and performers
The opportunity to contribute to the school magazine; The HaHa
School competitions every year in reading, handwriting and public speaking
Theatre trips
Out of school competitions where pupils’ work can receive wider publicity and praise
Finally, we believe that it is vital that our pupils recognise that English does not stop when they leave the English lesson; it is something that they take with them into every area of their lives wherever they go.
