Science is enjoyable; it generates exciting investigations and predictions. Within the guidelines of Common Entrance (and National Curriculum) we aim to offer a broad, balanced and exciting science course, which allows each pupil to progress confidently to reach his or her own potential.
Strategies for teaching science at Orwell Park lay special emphasis on skills and processes, developing children’s confidence and building on earlier experiences. This ensures continuous learning all the way through to Key Stage 2 and on to Common Entrance, or scholarship exams set by individual senior schools.
We aim to provide pupils with a variety of skills to pose realistic and appropriate problems, and to make the processes of science an avenue through which they can explore the natural world and solve problems.
We encourage all children to apply principles to new situations and to reflect upon their experiences so that they can hold informed and considered opinions.
We are privileged to have excellent facilities for the teaching of science, both in theory and practical work. All pupils at Orwell Park attend science lessons in well equipped science laboratories.
Science to Common Entrance (National Curriculum Key Stage 3 and above) is taught in the individual subject areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Forms I to IV are taught general Science to Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum, which incorporates topics from each of the specialist subject areas of science.
