Teaching

The curriculum at Orwell Park is very wide. Our aim here is to give parents some idea of what we get up to during lesson time and of the demands which we are making of the children.

Standards

We admit pupils of a very wide range of academic ability. There is however a minimum level below which we will not go in order to avoid placing the individual pupil at a disadvantage and/or compromising the quality of education which we are providing for the majority. Insistence on high standards of academic work invariably results in higher levels of attainment. Pupils' learning is assessed individually and each child's progress is discussed regularly at full meetings of the academic staff.

In the classroom we are aiming to deliver quality in breadth as well as depth, and though we are preparing our pupils for a wide range of examinations and schools our efforts are by no means confined to the demands of examination syllabuses; non-examined work constitutes a significant proportion of the curriculum and we have enjoyed considerable success in these areas. We have in place procedures to identify and cater for the needs of pupils who demonstrate an exceptional level of performance in both academic and non-academic activities, whilst our Learning Support Department - acknowledged nationally as a centre of excellence - identifies and caters for the individual learning difficulties of pupils, as well as supporting the learning of children across the whole ability range. This lays the foundations of lifetime learning strategies for all our pupils.

Facilities

We provide excellent classroom accommodation with up-to-date equipment and facilities, and there is considerable continuing investment in Information and Communications Technology and a commitment to its implementation across the full breadth of the academic spectrum. We make full use of our exceptional grounds for academic activity.

Curriculum

Our independence allows us to deliver much more than that which is demanded by the National Curriculum, and without being constrained by its limitations. We constantly monitor the demands of Common Entrance and the National Curriculum, and the scholarship requirements of senior schools.

Our academic curriculum is strong in the traditional academic disciplines and delivered using the most modern equipment and techniques. It is focused enough to provide a preparation for admission by scholarship and Common Entrance to the best senior schools in the country whilst being broad enough to stimulate academic interest, curiosity and ambition. Academic discipline is a key feature of our delivery of the curriculum, and all academic subjects and activities are accorded equal status.

We provide first-class guidance for parents on the appropriate choice of senior school, matching the academic potential of the pupil to the standards expected.
