Celebrating 31 Years of Lower Prep

Past and Present Come Together as Orwell Park Lower Prep Marks 31 Years

Orwell Park School celebrated 31 years of its early years provision, marking a journey that began in 1995 with just four children and has since grown into a thriving and much‑loved community.

To commemorate the milestone, Orwell welcomed former Head of the Junior School, Sandee Sledmere, back this week for a relaxed morning of coffee, cake and a tour of the modern Pre Prep building. During her visit, she met current staff — including some who worked alongside her and remain at the school today — as well as pupils, sharing memories and reflecting on how the department has evolved while staying true to its founding values.

Originally known as the Junior School, the Lower Prep was established in 1995 after the then headmaster identified the need for a dedicated early years department. Opening with just a handful of pupils in temporary buildings, it quickly became known for its warm, family atmosphere and joyful, creative approach to learning.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, former pupils and staff have been sharing photographs and stories that capture the spirit of those early years. Fond memories include school visits aboard the omnibus, swimming galas filled with encouragement, and the excitement of the Army building the School an assault course, where teamwork and resilience were learned alongside plenty of fun. Recalling her time at the school, Sandee Sledmere said creativity and happiness were at the heart of every day. “Our days were full of surprises — mystery trips, visiting storytellers, music, nature walks and outdoor adventures — all alongside a strong academic foundation,” she said. “The aim was always that children would run into school excited about what the day might bring.”

That ethos continues today. Now based in a purpose‑built Pre Prep building, the Lower Prep offers small class sizes, outdoor learning and strong pastoral care.

Vikki Wiggins, part of the Early Years leadership team, said: “The early years are fundamental. When children feel confident, secure and happy, they learn naturally and thrive.”  Hayley Lloyd, Head of Lower Prep, added: “We focus on laying strong foundations — academically, socially and emotionally — so children leave us ready for their next step.” Head of Orwell Park School Simon O’Malley said: “The Lower Prep is at the heart of Orwell Park. While facilities have changed over the years, our commitment to happy, confident children has not. Bringing former leaders, long‑standing staff and current pupils together perfectly reflects what makes the school special.”
